Atwater in the Park will close Friday, Oct. 23, ending a 12-year run in a converted church in Grosse Pointe Park.

The brewery and restaurant at 1175 Lakepointe St. opened in 2014. It became known for its former-church setting, indoor taproom and outdoor beer garden.

Atwater Brewery announced the closure on its official Facebook page Oct. 20, confirming that Friday would be the Grosse Pointe Park location's final day. The company invited customers to stop by, share memories and celebrate the people who made the taproom a neighborhood gathering place.

Lease not renewed

Property owner Jon Cotton told WXYZ that Tilray Brands, which operated the brewpub, did not renew its lease in September.

Cotton said the parties agreed to keep the location open through Oct. 23. WXYZ reported that Tilray had not responded to its request for comment before publication.

Atwater's Facebook announcement did not give a reason for the closure.

The taproom occupies a former church near Kercheval Avenue and Lakepointe Street. No replacement tenant has been announced.

Detroit brewery remains open

In a comment beneath its official Facebook announcement, Atwater Brewery confirmed that its Detroit location and production will continue operating as usual.

The Grosse Pointe Park closing follows the shutdown of Atwater's Grand Rapids taproom earlier this year.

The closures also come amid changes involving ownership of the Atwater brand.

Former owner Mark Rieth reached an agreement in June to reacquire the brewery from Tilray Brands, according to the Detroit Free Press.

Rieth previously owned Atwater before selling it to Molson Coors in 2020. Tilray acquired the brand in 2023.

Neither Atwater's closure announcement nor the reported ownership agreement establishes that the proposed transaction caused the Grosse Pointe Park location to close.

Final farewell

In its announcement, Atwater thanked employees and customers for supporting the Grosse Pointe Park location.

The brewery invited regulars to visit before the closing and help give the location a farewell.

Friday, Oct. 23, is the announced final day of business.
