Glenn Williams has spent nearly 20 years turning his Grosse Pointe Farms property at 19520 Mack Ave. into a walk-through Halloween attraction that raises money for local schools.

The Haunted Garage features themed rooms, animatronics, actors and special effects. This year’s scenes include scarecrows, graveyards, Frankenstein and a Jurassic Park room with a baby velociraptor. A Christmas-themed room offers a change of pace, according to the student newspaper North Pointe Now.

The newspaper reported that the attraction has raised tens of thousands of dollars for PTOs in Grosse Pointe and surrounding communities, citing Haunted Garage Productions.

Williams told WXYZ that supporting schools was central to the project.

“Raising money for the local schools was kind of my itch that I wanted to scratch,” Williams said.

Preparations begin in July. Volunteers help construct scenery and check the effects before visitors arrive. Volunteer Roland Carloni operates several animated characters, including three Frankensteins and a spider, WXYZ reported.

Williams said he combines traditional Halloween decorations with newer props suited to the attraction’s audience.

The Haunted Garage markets itself to families and offers “no-scare” lights for visitors who prefer actors to leave them alone, according to its website. Doughnuts and cider are also available.

Junior Sam Anusbigian told North Pointe Now that the attraction’s approach allows her to enjoy it with her younger sister.

Junior Cameron McEveney, who works at the concession stand, visited as a child before joining the crew four years ago. She described the attraction as “really community-driven,” with local families returning each year.
