The Grosse Pointe Symphony Orchestra opens its season at the Schaap Center, 15001 E. Jefferson Ave. in Grosse Pointe Park, at 7 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 25.

The evening’s program begins with Aaron Copland’s “Fanfare for the Common Man,” followed by Ludwig van Beethoven’s “The Consecration of the House,” according to the orchestra’s concert schedule.

Cellist Cameron Renshaw, this season’s Thomas Nester/Bernard Whitley Memorial Scholarship winner, will perform Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s “Rococo Variations” as soloist. Modest Mussorgsky’s “Pictures at an Exhibition” closes the program after intermission.

The scholarship honors GPSO founder Thomas Nester and charter member Bernard Whitley. It awards $1,000 and an opportunity to perform as a soloist with the orchestra, according to the orchestra’s website.

Students in grades 6-11 may audition on orchestral instruments; pianists are not eligible. The winner is also expected to participate in rehearsals and concerts as an orchestra member during the season.

Tickets cost $25 for general admission, $20 for seniors and veterans, and $10 for college students. K-12 students attend free.

Seating is open, and tickets are available at gpsymphony.org or at the door. Season ticket holders and advance ticket buyers with questions can contact John Cobau at (313) 909-1070 or [email protected].

Founded in 1953, the orchestra is listed among the Schaap Center’s program partners.

The remaining season includes a Dec. 6 concert at Our Lady Star of the Sea in Grosse Pointe Woods and Schaap Center performances March 7 and May 2, 2027. All three begin at 3 p.m.
