University Liggett begins its Division 4 boys tennis title defense Wednesday, Oct. 21, at Midland Tennis Center with four seeded flights and three returning individual flight champions.
The Grosse Pointe Woods school won last season’s championship by 10 points over Jackson Lumen Christi, according to the Michigan High School Athletic Association’s finals preview. It was Liggett’s first team title since 2022.
Lumen Christi enters ranked first, followed by Liggett and Ludington. The two-day Division 4 tournament concludes Thursday, Oct. 22.
Junior Justin Platt, last year’s No. 4 singles champion, is seeded second at No. 3 singles. Junior Fernando Romine holds the second seed at No. 4 singles.
At No. 2 doubles, junior Lucas Ferguson and sophomore Ian Moya are seeded second. Seniors Davis Ford and Charlie Laethem are seeded third at No. 1 doubles.
Ferguson won the No. 3 doubles championship last season with Rene Quint, while Laethem teamed with Landen Maltby to win No. 2 doubles, according to the school’s athletics page.
Lumen Christi’s challenge is led by top-seeded pairs at No. 2 and No. 4 doubles. Ludington has the top seeds at No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4 singles.
Coach Mark Sobieralski has guided Liggett to five team championships, according to the MHSAA’s championship records: 2016, 2017, 2020, 2022 and 2025.
Another victory would give the Knights consecutive Division 4 titles for the first time since 2016–17.
The MHSAA schedule lists the Division 2 finals for Oct. 23–24, concluding the Lower Peninsula boys tennis championships in Midland.
