Lululemon closed its Grosse Pointe City store at 17101 Kercheval on Sept. 27, ending three years of business in The Village shopping district.
The athletic apparel chain opened the location as a pop-up in summer 2023, with the possibility of a longer lease, according to Grosse Pointe News, which reported the closure Oct. 1.
The retailer did not respond to the newspaper's request for comment about the closure.
The store had also been the subject of a retail theft investigation involving multiple Lululemon locations across metro Detroit.
In December 2023, Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel announced three arrests connected to more than 30 alleged thefts targeting Lululemon and Ulta Beauty stores.
The attorney general's office said the alleged theft ring targeted Lululemon locations in Grosse Pointe and seven other Michigan communities.
Investigators alleged that groups entered stores, grabbed merchandise and left through the front doors to waiting vehicles. The state said losses connected to the thefts exceeded $200,000.
Grosse Pointe City Public Safety Detective Mike Narduzzi initially identified the pattern of thefts at metro Detroit Lululemon locations, according to the attorney general's office.
The investigation led to charges against three defendants. Those charges were allegations at the time of the state's announcement, not findings of guilt.
The documented theft problems do not establish why Lululemon closed its Grosse Pointe store.
Property manager Jim Bellanca told Grosse Pointe News that he believed the closure was a corporate decision rather than a result of local theft or weak sales.
Bellanca said the property had been listed with a national broker in an effort to attract another national retail tenant.
No replacement tenant was identified in the reviewed closure reporting.
